Leveraging Standards to Combat Research Misconduct and Ensure Research Integrity
Research integrity is the cornerstone of scholarly advancement and one of the hottest topics in scientific publishing today. DCL's David Turner wrote about the critical importance of research integrity and highlighted the role of XML standards such as JATS, BITS, and STS in supporting transparency, reproducibility, and long-term accessibility in scholarly publishing. Using lessons from the classic film Catch Me If You Can, this article uncovers the tricks behind research fraud and how industry standards can support the identification of research misconduct issues. Using these standards in concert with information from organizations such as ORCID, Ringgold, ROR, Crossref, and NISO, this article highlights powerful ways by which publishers can find and address crucial red flags before publication or peer review.

The Metre Convention: A Radical Initiative for its Time
At DCL we like to say "standards make the world go 'round." Standards come in all formats. On May 20, 1875, delegates from 17 countries gathered in Paris to sign one of the most influential treaties in history, which became the origin of many standards common today: The Treaty of Metre, also known as the Metre Convention. It was a radical initiative for its time and led to the creation of a measurement system that transcended language, politics, and tradition, paving the way for a new global era of scientific and technological progress.

Pragmatic AI Solutions Over Hype: The Real Innovations Driving Pharma Forward
AI-driven drug discovery is the darling of biotech investment, with one lab recently raking in $600 million in April. No end-to-end generative AI-assisted drug has yet been approved; however, AI is delivering significant value in more pragmatic ways. AI tools are enhancing patient enrollment, predicting toxicities, and optimizing trial strategies. For example, in clinical trials much development from AI companies is going into automating patient enrollment and recruitment and matching patients to trials in minutes rather than months. While ambitious, high-investment AI-driven drug discovery captures headlines, the true impact of AI in pharma may turn out to be the pragmatic, less glamorous applications.
