DCL Awarded Major Project for United States Patent and Trademark Office

Patents, a legal instrument granting inventors exclusive rights to their creations, play a pivotal role in safeguarding intellectual property and fostering economic growth. In the United States, patents have become indispensable pillars of innovation, promoting creativity, incentivizing research and development, and contributing significantly to the nation's economic prosperity. DCL was recently awarded a contract to automatically identify relevant prior art (RPA) for the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). This initiative will increase patent examination quality and efficiency and will speed up the examination of patents by automating the gathering of prior art materials from multiple archives and sources, which today is a largely manual process.

What's DCL Doing With AI?

Last year was certainly the year that large language models (LLMs) and generative pre-trained text (GPT) went mainstream.

While AI-everything blew up last year, it’s not a new technology for DCL. DCL employs a number of AI-related technologies into our systems, services, and tools. As DCL President Mark Gross states, "Another model we’ve been perfecting is a deep learning model that analyzes a page to detect equations automatically. DCL works with many scientific publishers who have seriously complex math in their journal articles. We’ve developed a process that can identify an equation that’s been produced as an image. Then, we convert the image and structure it into MathML, allowing automated equation generation from the XML."

Making a PDF That's Bigger Than Germany

Inspired by an Internet claim that PDFs have a maximum size of 381 X 381 kilometers, software developer Alex Chan created a PDF that is larger than Germany. She explored the internal structure of PDF files and also asked ChatGPT a few clarifying questions. From that investigation she was able to get enough context to write some simple PDF files by hand. With her newly discovered hand-crafted PDF writing abilities she tinkered with changing the page size and ultimately ended up with a PDF that Preview claimed is larger than the entire universe—approximately 37 trillion light years square!

The Problem With Digital Preservation: When Persistent DOIs Break

DOIs (Digital Object Identifiers) solve the common problem of keeping track of things. When a DOI is assigned, the link to the content or asset is persistent. If the original publisher goes out of business or disappears, the DOI can point to a successor publisher or to an archival source like CLOCKSS or Portico, or other preservation services. The link will still resolve and people can still access the content. But if there is no preservation service protecting the content to which a DOI is assigned, the DOI will stop working. The Journal of Librarianship and Scholarly Communication recently published an article by Martin Eve that details an alarming preservation deficit across scholarly journals.

Why STM Publishers Should Use XML

It's been 20+ years that DCL has chanted the mantra to use XML. Today a lot of the discourse is around when to implement XML in a publishing workflow but there are still publishers that do not take advantage of structured content.

Back in 2004, DCL's VP of Sales detailed the many reasons why STM publishers should implement this relatively new technology:

"It's 3pm. You've just had a meeting with your Executive Editor. He told you to cut the cost of production and reduce the time to market of your books and journals. You now go to another meeting. This time with the VP of Marketing. She tells you that, in an effort to increase revenue from existing customers, they are planning to develop dozens of separately purchasable, value-added features to the online products."
