Happy Birthday, DCL!

On October 2, 1981 DCL opened its doors. Last week we celebrated 42 years of helping clients improve communication by converting and structuring content for new platforms, programs, and technologies. We've seen so many technology changes these past 42 years and no doubt the changes over the next 40 years will be fast and furious as fueled by AI. What will remain consistent is our ongoing commitment to clients and our dedication to technological advances. The picture you see here was created by DALL-E with the prompt "data conversion laboratory in the style of a renaissance painting" and we think it captures our essence both old and new.

Lunch & Learn: Legal Implications in the Brave New AI World - Copyright Infringement

DCL's Mark Gross along with his son Daniel Gross, Partner at Myers Wolin, LLC, will discuss trademark and copyright infringement and training sets. Stories abound with legal suits filed against OpenAI, Meta, and others for training AI models with copyrighted content. In this DCL Learning Series lunch & learn discussion, we bring together a technologist and an attorney and a father and son with what will surely be a spirited and informative conversation. Bring your ideas and questions and lunch and meet us October 31 at noon ET.

Structured Content is Central to Product Lifecycle Management (PLM)

Structured content and XML are integral parts of Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) systems. To effectively manage the product's lifecycle, PLM systems require accurate, consistent, and organized data. DCL can facilitate the ingestion of data from a wide range of sources such as homegrown systems, 3rd party technical specifications, and other enterprise systems. Power your PLM with existing and legacy content by transforming it into intelligent structure.

What's Old is New to Discover: The Importance of Legacy Content

The NLM's PubMed Central recently made available hundreds of of complete back issues of historically significant biomedical journals along with human- and machine-readable citations. The newly digitized legacy content is now part of an ever-expanding digital ecosystem that supports researchers. Full text and corresponding metadata, including titles, authors, affiliations, volume, issue, publication date, pagination, and license information is fully searchable. The article-level digitization enables linkage with corresponding catalog records and DOIs (if applicable), enabling today's researchers the ability to discover important historical research.

Why The Future of Documents is Structured Content

Our partners at XPublisher provide an excellent breakdown of structured content and detail why it is the key to document creation. Structured content is text or text modules that authors and editors create based on a fixed structure such that the text is enriched semantically with metadata. Structured content is cross-media capable, which means it can be published and used on any output channel and serve as the basis for efficient multichannel publishing. Hallucinate, Confabulate, Obfuscate: The Perils of Generative AI Going Rogue | 12 October | 12:00 pm ET

The promise of AI as embodied in new generative AI models such as ChatGPT, Bard, and others quickly went from lofty promises to warnings of peril. While we at DCL have always been optimistic about the advantages of AI, we also remain cautious as we test how best to implement explainable and responsible AI. Join this lunch and learn conversation between two of DCL’s talented technical minds as they discuss recent AI hallucinations they’ve observed, AI gone terribly wrong, and AI initiatives that seem truly promising. They will also detail how DCL tests and implements AI in its own automated systems.

Mark Gross at Digital Book World 2012

At Digital Book World in 2012 Mark Gross, President of DCL, spoke with GoodEReader about the pervasive theme at that year's event—digital textbooks. The concept of digital textbooks gained traction at the higher education level and became a widespread topic of discussion in 2010. Two years later, digital textbooks maintained even more momentum as it became clear public education was ready to go digital.
