The New York Public Library's Journey to Structure the Catalog of Copyright Entries
|
Like many good stories, it all started with a mystery. A simple request from a patron of the New York Public Library (NYPL) to obtain a digital copy of this book launched a multi-year mystery of how best to achieve the NYPL's vision to provide any book, anywhere, anytime, at no cost. The NYPL recognized that a great resource to help achieve their vision resides in the Catalog of Copyright Entries maintained by the US Copyright Office. However, even the digitized Catalog of Copyright Entries lacks the structure required to effectively search for titles across library systems. Thus began NYPL's journey to unlock this record of American creativity by applying content structure and semantics to the Catalog. Enjoy this presentation from Greg Cram, NYPL, and Mark Gross, DCL, recorded during the Charleston Conference.

Transforming Standards Publication: The SMART Approach by Standards Development Organizations (SDOs)
|
Unlike traditional journal articles and books, standards documentation involves complex requirements like specific date ranges, historical versions, and detailed change logs. Published technical standards are living documents intended to continuously change with all changes tracked so users can refer to earlier versions of the standard. These requirements necessitate advanced tools that support granular delivery and manage the extensive collaborative efforts typical in standards development, where hundreds may contribute to a single document. David Turner from DCL recently hosted a conversation with two industry experts—David Nix, Digital Transformation Officer at IEC, and Colin O'Neil, Content Solutions Specialist at SiteFusion ProConsult. Listen as these three discuss the joint program by the IEC and ISO called SMART standards.

Mimo: A Large Language Model Trained on ISA Content
|
The International Society of Automation (ISA) recently released its large language model, Mimo, trained exclusively on ISA technical content. Mimo provides sources for its answers so that users can go directly to the standard, journal article, or report from which Mimo used to answer a query. This product and approach align with DCL's prediction published in the Silverchair 2024 Technology Trends Report—“I predict that publishers who develop
their own LLMs based on supervised
machine learning that uses the publishers'
verified and structured content will
experience a transformation in how their
audiences discover and consume
journal content." - Marianne Calilhanna.

It's Summertime: Play Ball!
|
In the United States, summertime is closely associated with baseball. The National Archives published a free ebook and digital download of Baseball: The National Pastime in the National Archives. This interesting take on the story of baseball demonstrates how America's national pastime could not have been possible without the initiative and innovation of three people—Benjamin F. Shibe, John A. Hillerich, and George H. Rawlings. These three men deisgned and submitted the patents for three key tools used in the game—the baseball glove, bat, and ball. This book tells the story of the US national pastime through documents, photographs, audio, video, and other records that have been preserved.

Acknowledgment from the Library of Congress - George Washington Papers
DCL received acknowledgment from the Library of Congress for conversion work completed for the George Washington Papers, American Memory Collection in September 2000. The papers of army officer and first U.S. president George Washington (1732-1799), held in the Manuscript Division of the Library of Congress, constitute the largest collection of original Washington papers in the world. They consist of approximately 77,000 items accumulated by Washington between 1745 and 1799. The collection documents Washington's childhood education, his first career as a surveyor, his experience as a militia colonel during the French and Indian War, his election as a Virginia delegate to the first and second Continental Congresses, his role as general of the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War, his presidency of the Constitutional Convention in 1787, his two terms as president (1789-1797), and his retirement. DCL is proud to contribute to preserving the historical record of U.S. history.
