Getting Closer to a True XML-Early Publishing System

How do you create a system for auto XML text conversion for Word files when you cannot control the creation of the Word file, nor force authors to follow any predefined template or complex instructions? Further, how do you ensure consistently good XML produced from the system? Mark Gross from DCL and Charles O'Connor from Aries Systems presented at Balisage 2023 last week on a new XML-first workflow they have been working on to improve production turnaround times and the user experience for editors and production staff.

Multi-lingual Eye Test Chart

We think of globalization as something new, but this eye chart from well over a century ago was intended to be usable for people of all nationalities. This multilingual eye-test chart, published in 1907, was the creation of the optometrist George Mayerle (ca. 1870–1929), a “Graduate German Expert Optician” who set up shop in San Francisco in the mid-1890s. Mayerle was a charter member of the American Optometric Association at its founding in 1898. The eye chart contains seven vertical panels that test vision with characters in the Roman alphabet (for English, German, and other European readers) and also in Japanese, Chinese, Russian, and Hebrew. A panel in the center replaces the alphabetic characters with symbols for children and adults who were illiterate or who could not read any of the other writing systems offered.

Platform Migration: A Model Case Study for Scholarly Publishers

Maverick Publishing Specialists details how they helped The American Association of Immunologists (AAI) move more than 100 years of journal content to the Silverchair Platform following a well-organized and orchestrated plan that involved a network of third-party providers working with a small in-house team and a professional project manager. For the 7-month duration of the migration, Maverick worked with the members of the team to ensure a timely launch of the platform. AAI emphasized the need for a strong focus on data, with bonus points for having someone on staff who knows XML.

eLearning Content Digitization

Cisco is the world leader in IT, networking, and cybersecurity solutions. Cisco has transformed how people connect, communicate, and collaborate. Cisco owned thousands of hours of valuable instructional materials but they weren’t organized in a way that they could be used with customers. Cisco needed to centralize and convert these instructional materials into a standardized format, using SCORM XML, to facilitate effective use of its learning materials. Read how DCL transformed more than 800 source hours of content to conform to Cisco's Learning Management System (LMS) requirements.

It’s Really Time to Get Serious About Accessibility  | 16 August | 12:00 pm EDT

Making content accessible for people with visual and cognitive impairments has long been a topic of discussion as well as a service provided by DCL. Yet here we are in 2023 and a recent statistic from the Allen Institute states that “only about 2.4% of published scientific research papers are fully accessible.” Why is this? Join DCL President Mark Gross and the scholarly publishing industry’s biggest proponent of accessibility, Bill Kasdorf, as they discuss some of the trends they are seeing across the industry.

Fonto 8.5!
Summer is here and so is Fonto's latest release This year’s summertime release from Fonto introduces an often-asked feature in the form of the new placeholder family, and while this release can’t offer you anything in the form of a refreshment to deal with the summer heat, it does offer a refresh of Fonto's context menus. This release also features something “hot” for all the developers out there in the form of improved error reporting.

IXIASOFT and DITA Go Way Back Before DITA

XIASOFT played an important role in the XML documentation marketplace, providing TEXTML Server software to newspaper and periodical publishers. As TEXTML Server gained traction, IXIASOFT caught the eye of IBM. The technical writer responsible for TEXTML Server documentation was invited to join a small group of IBM employees for a personal project. The goal? To write the first specifications of DITA 1.0. The rest, as they say, is history.

Documents Pulped By Bulldozer - XML to the Rescue

In July 2004, the DCL website shared an interesting story about a small town in Colorado that lost many municipal buildings AND the documents contained within due to a disgruntled citizen:

On June 4th, a man ground his armor-plated bulldozer into gear and headed for Granby, a small town 85 miles west of Denver. He was on a mission of destruction. Two years previously he'd lost a zoning dispute with the town and now was about to take revenge on everyone he saw as responsible for his misfortune.

For over an hour and a half the man proceeded to destroy as much of the town as he could. The police couldn't stop him - their rounds couldn't penetrate the bulldozer's armor-plating. When he was done, the Town Hall, library, several businesses and stores, and a bank were all crushed under the bulldozer's treads.

The damage ran to over $5 million. But it wasn't just the municipal buildings that were destroyed - the documents in them were all wiped out too. The fact is, many city governments still keep much of their documentation in paper format and aren't prepared for catastrophe.
